Is it still "Mine!"?

We know it's been a while since we wrote-- we got Mine! out to the world, we sold a lot of copies, we raised thousands of dollars for Planned Parenthood, and then, well, 2020 and a Supreme Court seat or two and an election and all of the rest. And while we wanted to thank you again for everything you've done so far, we also want to draw your attention to a few things you might not have heard about.
Even with the Supreme Court’s decision today to let the Affordable Care Act remain law, their recent decision to review a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade has further emboldened a number of states, making their citizens increasingly vulnerable to having rights over their own bodies restricted:
- In New Jersey, State Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin have failed their constituents by blocking the Reproductive Freedom Act (S3030/A4848), a bill to protect and expand access to reproductive health care including prenatal care, abortion, and birth control for more than 240 days. Governor Phil Murphy has publicly committed to signing the Reproductive Freedom Act into law.
- In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation on May 19 that bans abortion at six weeks of gestation, so early in pregnancy that many may not even know that they're pregnant. The Texas law comes with a new, uniquely cruel twist that would allow anyone who is opposed to abortion—regardless of where they live or whether they have any association with a patient—to sue an abortion provider or anyone who helps a patient obtain an abortion, such as by providing financial help or transportation.
- And these states aren't alone. 549 abortion restrictions have been introduced in 47 state legislatures this year alone, including 165 abortion bans as of June 7. Seventeen states have so-called “trigger” bans and/or pre-Roe abortion bans that could go into effect if Roe v. Wade is overturned or weakened.
We know it's tight for a lot of people now, but if you can, please give the good folks at Planned Parenthood a hand with your money, your voice, or your vote.
